2D Game Artist (Pixel Art Focus)

United States | Remote | Part-Time (Salaried)

Demystified Software is a small, independent game and software studio focused on creating fun, nostalgic, and engaging 2D games. Our projects lean heavily into classic gameplay and retro-inspired aesthetics, built using modern tools like Phaser and GameMaker Studio.

We're currently looking for a part-time 2D Game Artist with a strong pixel art background to help bring our game worlds, characters, and interfaces to life.

Overview

As our 2D Game Artist, you'll work directly with the developer (that's me) to create cohesive visual assets for top-down and side-scrolling games. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys indie game development, values creative collaboration, and can work independently in a remote environment.

Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Create pixel art and 2D assets for:
    • Characters, enemies, and NPCs
    • Environments, tilesets, and props
    • UI elements, icons, and HUD components
  • Design spritesheets and tilesets optimized for Phaser and GameMaker Studio
  • Create simple frame-based animations where needed
  • Adapt and refine art styles based on existing references or design direction
  • Collaborate remotely via email, chat, and shared cloud tools
  • Deliver production-ready assets that integrate cleanly into the game pipeline

Requirements

  • Portfolio demonstrating strong 2D game art skills (pixel art preferred)
  • Experience creating assets specifically for games
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
  • Ownership of your own computer and creative software (Aseprite, Photoshop, etc.)
  • Comfortable working remotely on a flexible, part-time schedule
  • Reliable internet connection and consistent communication habits

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Phaser, GameMaker Studio, or similar 2D engines
  • Familiarity with frame-based animation or simple skeletal animation
  • UI/UX asset creation experience
  • Interest in retro, arcade, or nostalgic game aesthetics
  • Prior work on indie or small-team game projects

Compensation & Employment Type

  • Part-time salaried position
  • Salary dependent on experience and skill level
  • Fully remote
  • Flexible hours within agreed-upon availability

Demystified Software is a small, growing studio, and this role is best suited for someone who enjoys working in an indie environment where creativity, collaboration, and passion for games matter.
